The global industrial and supply chain landscape is undergoing profound restructuring, while the downstream textile and apparel industries are accelerating their transformation. At the same time, China’s “east-to-west shift” of textile and apparel production is gaining further momentum, overseas production capacity continues to relocate, and digital technologies are rapidly penetrating the industry. Against this backdrop, China’s sewing machinery industry is entering a new stage of growth focused on higher-quality demand, driven by digital and intelligent upgrading and underpinned by collaboration and shared benefits.
Recently, the 2026 Directors’ Meeting of the Market Work Committee of the China Sewing Machinery Association was held, bringing together industry leaders, channel service providers and representatives of local industry associations. Drawing on the latest industry operating data, end-user pain points and regional opportunities, participants conducted an in-depth analysis of the new dynamics reshaping the industry’s market landscape and explored pathways for market transformation during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.
Fundamental Industry Conditions Are Being Reshaped, with Structural Differentiation Creating New Opportunities
In the first half of 2026, geopolitical conflicts, energy market volatility and persistent global inflation continued to weigh on the momentum of external economic recovery. Downstream textile and apparel companies faced increasingly volatile orders and shrinking profit margins, creating a complex and challenging environment for China’s sewing machinery industry.Wu Jiling, Vice Chairman of the China Sewing Machinery Association and Deputy Director of the Market Work Committee, provided an assessment of industry trends based on official statistics: “With global consumer demand remaining weak, supply chains accelerating their relocation and downstream purchasing becoming more cautious, the industry as a whole is characterized by stable growth, slower momentum and intensifying differentiation.” According to key data, 312 above-designated-size manufacturing enterprises in the industry recorded year-on-year revenue growth of 12.18% in the first half of the year, while total profits increased by 17.35%, indicating a steady recovery in operating efficiency. However, the proportion of loss-making enterprises increased, although total losses narrowed significantly. Accounts receivable and finished goods (inventories) rose by 17.05% and 5.90%, respectively, indicating continued pressure on business operations.

From a market perspective, significant structural differentiation has emerged across different segments of the industry. In the first half of 2026, industrial sewing machine output increased by 10.17% year on year, with overall production capacity being released steadily. However, the market showed a clear pattern of “higher volumes at lower prices.” Domestic sales of sewing equipment in China declined by approximately 15% year on year in the first half, although the decline narrowed substantially compared with the previous year. Meanwhile, cumulative exports increased by 2.69% year on year, representing a significant slowdown from the growth rate recorded at the end of 2025.
Shao Lishi, Deputy Director of the Market Work Committee and Executive Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Sewing Equipment Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the competitive pressures facing traditional segments based on first-hand market research: “Sales of conventional ‘three machines’ in the Guangdong market declined in the first half of the year. The market has become increasingly concentrated among brands, with very thin margins, and market activity has shown signs of stagnation since entering the second half of the year.”
In sharp contrast, demand for intelligent and automated equipment continues to surge. According to statistics from 100 leading enterprises in the industry, automatic machine products recorded year-on-year growth of as much as 36.4%. High-efficiency intelligent equipment such as computerized cutting machines, automatic fabric spreading machines and automatic pocket-opening machines has become an essential requirement for end-user upgrading, serving as an important growth engine for the industry. Meanwhile, as overseas end users become increasingly familiar with Chinese equipment brands, exports of used equipment from Chinese brands have also continued to gain momentum, clearly reflecting the broad release of global demand for equipment renewal and intelligent upgrading.
Regional markets are also undergoing systematic restructuring, while the gradual relocation of domestic textile and apparel production is creating new sources of demand. As China’s strategy of “moving textile and apparel production westward and pursuing a gradient-based industrial layout” continues to deepen, textile and apparel clusters in central and western China are developing rapidly. Industrial support systems are improving and production capacity is expanding steadily, driving concentrated demand for equipment replacement and intelligent upgrading and becoming an important source of support for stable industry growth.
Li Xiaofeng of SGSB Group Co., Ltd. noted: “The pace of upgrading in China’s textile industry is currently far exceeding expectations. Newly established industrial parks in central and western China are no longer limited to basic production facilities; they are simultaneously incorporating software support and digital management systems. As a result, the starting point for overall upgrading is high and the pace of iteration is fast.”
As the output value of textile industries in central and western China continues to rise, a prime window for replacing traditional equipment and popularizing intelligent production lines has fully opened. According to the marketing executives of several companies, newly established industrial parks in central and western China are primarily focused on large-scale and intensive production, with a concentration of labor-intensive enterprises and strong demand for automation and digital transformation. At the same time, these regions share common challenges, including incomplete industrial support systems, wide service coverage areas and shortages of local technical talent. High-quality equipment brands, mature solutions and localized service systems are therefore urgently needed to support industrial upgrading.
Overseas markets are also seeing breakthroughs across multiple segments and regions. Southeast Asia is continuing to absorb relocated production capacity, North Africa is strengthening its role as a link between European and Asian supply chains, and Central Asia is steadily recovering by leveraging its geographic advantages. A new overseas expansion model integrating “products, services, brands and solutions” is taking shape. In the first half of 2026, industry exports reached USD 2.053 billion, up 2.69% year on year. Concentrated demand for equipment renewal in production relocation destinations such as Southeast Asia, North Africa and Latin America has made these regions key markets for the growth of the industry’s foreign trade.
Overall, companies across the industry are facing widespread operating pressures from rising costs, elevated inventory levels and tighter cash collection. At the same time, clear structural growth opportunities are emerging, with intelligent equipment, innovative enterprises and emerging markets continuing to generate new momentum.
Evolving End-User Demand Is Changing the Logic of Market Competition
With the widespread adoption of small-batch, fast-turnaround and flexible production in the downstream apparel industry, the purchasing logic of end users is undergoing a fundamental transformation, overturning the traditional market model of “winning through volume and competing on low prices.” A clear consensus emerged at the meeting: downstream demand is no longer simply about whether equipment is sufficient, but whether solutions are effective, whether they can address specific pain points, and whether they can create value.

End-user purchasing is shifting from “hardware acquisition” to “value enablement.” Qiu Yangyou, Deputy Director of the Market Work Committee and Vice President of JACK Technology Co., Ltd., accurately captured this transformation: “Fewer and fewer end customers are discussing individual machines, while more and more are discussing integrated solutions and digital upgrading. Small-batch, fast-turnaround production scenarios are forcing the entire sewing equipment industry to evolve and upgrade.”
Pan Jianhua, Deputy Director of the Market Work Committee and Assistant General Manager of Meiji Technology Group Co., Ltd., added that increasingly sophisticated requirements for end-user production mean that equipment stability, fabric adaptability, stitch quality and the ability to address specific details—such as eliminating bird’s nests and minimizing thread tails—have become core criteria in equipment selection.
At the same time, shortages of skilled workers continue to constrain industrial development. Lin Meina, Deputy Director of the Market Work Committee and General Manager of Fujian Xinhongyun Garment Machinery Trading Co., Ltd., stated directly: “The apparel industry is facing an extreme shortage of skilled workers. Automated, AI-enabled and digitally integrated equipment is a key driver for accelerating the industry’s development.”
Driven by these changes in demand, competition in the industry is also shifting from “cut-throat price competition” to “value-based co-development.” Homogeneous competition has become increasingly pronounced, with conventional equipment exports showing a clear trend of “higher volumes but lower prices.” In the first half of 2026, industrial sewing machine export volume increased by 6.25% year on year, while export value declined by 2.55%, demonstrating how low-price competition is squeezing industry margins.
Zhou Yong, head of the Overseas Business Division of Zhejiang Zoje Sewing Technology Co., Ltd., identified the key to breaking this cycle: “The industry must turn price competition into value competition. Only sufficient profit margins can support technological innovation and product iteration and enable healthy development.”
Against the backdrop of global industrial relocation, overseas customers are also upgrading their purchasing criteria. They are moving away from a sole focus on low prices and placing greater emphasis on equipment return on investment, intelligent capabilities and full-lifecycle service support.
Liang Junjie, Deputy Director of the Market Work Committee and General Manager of Dongguan Xiangxing Sewing Machinery Co., Ltd., also emphasized that the path forward for the industry is becoming increasingly clear: “Abandoning low-price competition, precisely identifying target customers and deepening specialization in market segments are the only ways for companies in the industry to break through under the current circumstances.”
At present, downstream brands are turning over inventories more quickly, with short-cycle orders accounting for more than 70%. End-user demand is undergoing a profound shift toward higher quality, greater customization and greater intelligence. This is driving the sewing machinery industry to move beyond extensive competition based on scale and conventional distribution models toward refined, value-based competition characterized by higher quality and higher added value, bringing comprehensive upgrading across the industry.
